Catchup News.... February 1. 2020

Changes transpire with life.  I have spent almost two decades as an artist at a local Gallery.
Just yesterday, moved all my artwork back to my studio, and am "re-firing" and excited.  There is a much to catch up on my Website, but now I will have time to work on it.  Excited to revamp Art by Diana Kaye site, and catch everyone up on my new works.  It will take some time for my rusty fingers to complete the website task, but do it, we will.  Stay tuned and check in occasionally!
Hopefully you will find this new format  to your liking.  The site likely will be fluctuating as I design away, so hang in there with me!
Thank you for stopping in and giving your time to the reading of my posts and viewing of my work.

Past times with the beautiful Pen Women

Pen Women Art Show at Artel Gallery culminating a Summer's Work
Well, yes, that's me, the tallest one in the grey skirt.  We have a wonderful growing group of Pen Women, writers, artists, and musicians and the most wonderful thing is that each one is so supportive and encouraging of the entire group.

The opening evening of Branching Out was fun, except after a very full week, I had physical challenges to get back on my feet - but here I am, at it again with grand plans, which only a portion will probably be realized. But recovery from back surgery is realized for the most part.  Study/Studio is still in process of being rearranged, I am back at my activities at the Blue Morning Gallery and its good to be with these wonderful friends again as well as being able to better take care of my home. I'm one of those people who love my home and housework, although it doesn't always show in results.

School has started and it seems I had too little time to spend with grandchildren but they have all been in and out and I love them extravagantly, they inspire me deeply with their love.  My  mother passed away in Wyoming in May and it has been a journey to become alone in that relationship here on earth, prompting a desire to write - but perhaps better held off until after the first of the year.

So that is the main parts of life of an artist - a special walk - new inspirations sweep over me and I am anxious to pour them out - yet I read books on creation, creating, and realize there is a time to plan, to "hover" over the process before starting - the Tree of Life is the beginning of a new Series to come.  I wait for it.  Thank you all for encouragement and for being interested in the work.  Have a super fall!!!!

Back to work in 2013

Hello everyone!  And Happy New Year 2013!
(a little late - but here it is!)

Art has been on the slow side since back surgery, although the work on the 20 Page Art Journal continued, was finished, and the journey recorded for all to see on this website as well as four different showings along the Gulf Coast. Two above pieces are in the process of being framed for showing.  The first one is simply called "Papaya and Peach" and the second one is called "Desert Storm."  These incorporate an usual process with both soft and oil pastels, on a sturdy gesso paper known as "Stonehenge" paper, and are large - 22" x 28" both which also have interesting textures.

Then a "lull" where I concentrated on healing from back surgery, which now appears to be quite successful, but due to continued problems with "getting around" for me translated "zooming all the time," I am informed I need knee replacements because of a childhood abnormality of the knees that has caused much damage. I have no kneecaps on the fronts of my knees.  But healing time is much quicker they tell me.  I choose to believe that.

Right now I am at work, prepping some pieces for a proposed showing at Adonna's Bakery and Cafe on Palafox Place in downtown Pensacola. I'm not sure when we will be hanging; when I say we, I mean the Pensacola Branch of Pen Women, a National Organization of Women Writers, Musicians, and Artists.  Also working on finishing up "Crow Woman" and attempting a special, unusual framing project for her.

A variety of pieces have been placed in a small, but quite elegant gallery in the historic Old Railroad Depot, also known as the Crown Plaza Hotel in Pensacola.  (A plug for my friend and owner of the Gallery, Stone and Glassworks, Marilyn McDonald Dorsey.)  You can see some of my pottery, photography, and unusual pastel works as well as watercolor. Marylin has a variety of pieces, from some stunning glass work, jewelry, painting, and one of a kind innovative art pieces. The Gallery is located across from the Civic Center, also in the downtown area of Pensacola.

So here's to a wonderful year to everyone.  Even with challenges ahead we can make a spot in the sun in which to do a little "shining" in the world.  Keep on keeping on!

The Summer of Struggle

Is everyone back in school - settled into fall routines?

My routines are completely "down the tubes," as they say.

Back surgery went well, once I finally got there, waylaid by anemia a couple of times, needing treatment.  So, as I journaled, much of what was going on in my life, was reflected in my journal.  This photo of a journal page is called "Metamorphosis"  More detail resides on the 20 Page Journal tab of this website.

Trying to use pain, lowered functioning, loss, though temporary, of abilities - as a learning tool, and being boldly wise about it while often being a pain because of some whining, somehow we have made it through.  Friends, family, a new baby girl (granddaughter), kind thoughts, prayers from many I'll probably never know about, held me together. We went through a hurricane though we were only on the edges, a major tropical storm before that, trusting faith to keep us all firm and standing.  Literally. Now just need  to gain my strength back.

Another Journal, this one for the Brooklyn Arts Project is underway - I think I will title it "Uncommon Chickens" - - more to come as I work on it, and a piece I must paint/charcoal of a young woman from the Crow Tribe, then getting art ready for Christmas displays are in the near future.

It will never be the same again.  Have you ever crossed those kind of bridges?  Perhaps the Uncommon Chickens Journal will reflect a come back, we'll see.  We often use the word "chicken" especially when young to express taunting of someone who is in fear, or too wise to do something foolish.  I hope this Journal will be a story of uncommon chickens who show courage, the ability to have fun and try the possible and impossible, be themselves, no matter what other chickens think, and who aren't afraid to be an uncommon chicken

Have a great fall everyone.

A result of the journey - "a beautiful surprise instead."
Must confess to lying in bed for a while working on art journal - I have not yet configured how to set up an oil painting station or sleep with charcoal smudged into the sheets.

I have had back surgery May 30th of 2012 and am recuperating.  The recent months have watched as I journal a transformation spiritually, physically, and emotionally, along with experimenting with new papers, surfaces, and techniques to create art.

Not surprisingly the Journal, which will be displayed in the Mobile Museum of Art in part of July and part of August, turned into a chronicle of a personal journey.  The Journey included many other artists, some finding similar outcomes.  I can't wait until the show - it will be amazing.  Hopefully I can make it over to Mobile at that time for the July 13th Artists Reception.

I have lost my camera, but will attempt to post some of the photos of the pages - some are already on the tab in this website under 20 PAGE PROJECT.

Have a wonderful art-full summer.  Living life to the fullest can make an artist of all who choose to live fully.

And if you are a prayer, and are so inclined, please pray I find my camera or can get a new one!

Late Summer in Pensacola

The summer has gone by quickly.  Too quickly.  Or too slowly depending on the heat index.

Painting was on a hiatus for a while, but now I am going again, having just finished a new experiment in exploring just painting whatever came into my head, reaching into a place to find an answer, and perhaps another question.

I was pleasantly surprised as I was juried into the Artel Gallery Show, "The Other Side of the Coin" with the Refugee and the Lament charcoals.  A social statement and an environmental statement!  The Reception was so much fun, in part because I was invited to an authentic Italian Restaurant by an friend who is married to an artist that I have respect greatly for some time, friends who attend our church, and then we visited the gallery together.  Other friends that I haven't seen for a long time came to the Reception and I saw a couple of other old friends.

If you ever get a chance to google, or see in person, the work of Kreg Yingst, I high recommend you do so.

And a great thanks to Artel, a class act Gallery!

Next to debut is a large painting of a Lion, an Eagle, and a Raven.  A new spin-off on the Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe?  No, I hope this is a work that will stand on its own with uniqueness.

Until next time.

Summer in Pensacola

Summer has come in a flurry of activity.  Along the  Roadway was a good show with many visitors to the Gallery stopping in for a look and to enjoy our receptions with us.

I admit to being lost in images that hold multiple meanings and possibilities and that cling close to the earth and the spiritual.

I haven't created much art - a sunny, but shady summer piece from a walk about the park near our house.  The charcoals that come from deep within.  I am working on retraining myself to think and truly experience what is before my eyes, and to really look - not at what I THINK something is, but to see what it REALLY is.

We miss swimming in our beautiful Gulf.  Temperatures of over 100 F have suddenly come upon us.

Here's hoping you are having a good summer and that the world around you is holding much beauty for you.

Amazing Year Underway

The first four months of 2011 have seen many changes, both in the world and in my life, in many ways.

We moved to a new gallery location in April.  It is spacious and elegant and has the room for classes, of which will kick off in May.  You can go to the Blue Morning Gallery website, http://bluemorninggallery.com
for a line-up of the classes.  We hope you will join us in one or more.

I have been painting palms and a swamp foliage painting in acrylic and am beginning another monkey charcoal painting.  I call my charcoals drawins AND paintings, as the medium is often rubbed and manipulated and ends up flowing like paint across the paper.

I am in a Featured Artist Show for the month of May, titled "Along the Roadway" with three other artists. You are invited to come to 21 Palafox street anytime after April 30 to view the show and our new Gallery.  You are also invited to our picnic themed Reception on May 6th at 5:00pm to 8:pm.  Bring your family and friends and enjoy some good snacks and good art.  I think you will find my pieces quite different - in fact - for blog readers, here is a hint:
Along the Roadway - Around the World!

Gallery night is also coming up May 20th, and you can find me at the Blue Morning Gallery or Artel Gallery with the Pen Women that evening.  Stop in and say hello!

New Year - New Art Show - New Hope and Excitement

Moving into a new year and new adventures in art!

Art and Soul, a new members' art show at the Blue Morning Gallery will be highlighted with a members' reception on January 7th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  I'm looking forward to meeting new and old friends and a year of intensified painting and art production.

One of the highlights of the last month in 2010 was an art event for the children in our neighborhood, (with the assistance of my youngest grandson) many of whom are children of servicemen.  Their finished art was amazing and we had a great time.

One of my goals for the coming year is to make a statement, "Paint the Wold with Hope and Healing."  Much can be said for this statement - considering the wars, the degradation of our environment and current economic status around most of the world, and increasing violence within humanity.  Paint the World's goal is to bring attention to beautiful Creation and ways to fulfill our passion to bring about Hope and Healing in the World.

I'm excited about the adventures and possibilities that will open as we walk down the road of Hope and Healing in 2011!

Wake up and Change your World - a message that is repeated to me over and over.  I love to paint subjects from creation  I believe art can be both a social, environmental, and spiritual statement for change.
